Identity Theft

Identity theft is when a criminal uses another person’s personal information to take on that person’s identity. Identity theft is much more than the misuse of a Social Security number; it can entail credit card and mail fraud as well. One bit of personal information is all a criminal needs to steal your identity. Once identity thieves get your personal information, they may:

  • Call your credit card company & change
    your billing address
  • Open new credit cards under your name
  • Establish wireless phone service in your name
  • Open a bank account in your name and write
    bad checks
  • File for bankruptcy under your name
  • Buy a car in your name
  • Get identification such as driver’s license with
    their picture in your name

Who is at Risk?

According to a report from the Federal Trade Commission’s protection bureau, 27.3 million Americans had their identity stolen between April 2003 to the end of that year. Hijacking of personal and financial information, which is used to perpetrate fraud or theft, cost businesses and financial institutions more than $48 billion in losses over a 12 month period. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, identity theft is the fastest-growing crime in America. About 10 million people had their identities stolen in 2004. We can help you avoid the risk of this crime happening to you with our personal and business shredding services.
